Opening up Soesterberg Air Base

A few weeks ago we were approached by Stichting Het Utrechts Landschap to help them devise a strategy to make the transformation of Soesterberg Air Base more public. Built in 1911, it was home to the United States Air Forces in Europe for almost 40 years. The airbase closed in 2008. What is left is an almost mint site with 2 runways (1 has a length of 3,5 kms), 17 shelters, all kinds of bunkers and remnants from the Cold War (given the fact that Soesterberg was an important air base for the Americans in Europe, there have always been speculations about the existence of cruise missiles).

In the near future, with history still fresh around the corner, Soesterberg will transform into a public space with various state of the art facilities. A land the size of 1.000 football pitches will be given back to the public domain, and should become a central park in the middle of The Netherlands. There will be ample room for nature, for the new National Defense Museum, for walking and biking tracks, housing, offices and numerous artistic interventions with various partners.

We are happy and proud to be involved in the project. We are currently in the first phase of setting up a public online strategy for employing different interactive tools and social networks, to include all the different neighbouring communities and the general public. We will keep you posted as we proceed.

(One interesting detail: Juha was born next to the airbase, and lived for almost 15 years close to the area. However, we are not sure how to put a price on that yet…)

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
