Summer programming for the Netherlands Architecture Institute

This summer Non-fiction is organizing an extensive programme of public events at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) in Rotterdam. The NAI is a cultural institute for architecture and urban development, comprising a museum, an archive plus library, and a platform for lectures and debates. The institute has one of the largest architecture collections in the world and organizes more than twenty exhibitions every year.

Connecting the NAi to the city and vise versa
We have been asked to activate the NAI during the summer and make it the centre of gravity in the city with a mix of small and big(ger) events that attract a broad audience, connect the institute to the city and local initiatives and express the views of the NAI and the topics and ideas that are presented through the main exhibition of the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). This exhibition is hosted by the NAi and shows how the city of tomorrow is taking shape and the part that designers are playing in this.

Series of events and an the development of ‘urban utilities’
Our work focuses on a succession of events that enable visitors to learn about the NAI and get acquainted with architecture and urban developments in an active and inspiring way. The events will range from intimate workshops and lectures to lively concerts, talkshows and crowdsourced presentations that approach architecture from an unusual viewpoint.

Our programme will circle around major (urban) trends, like sustainable architecture and participatory planning, to more concrete developments, like urban agriculture and sports and location-based-services and -games. During the course of the summer we not only want to share some of these issues with our audience; we also want to develop new and usable ideas, products and services that will contribute to the quality of live in the city.

The programme is still in progress, although we did decide on the dates and themes:

In collaboration with local partners
We are developing the programme in close cooperation with many (local) partners, including other cultural institutions, companies, artists and other creative professionals. In addition, we are collaborating with Test Site Rotterdam, a project by the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam and architecture office ZUS, which focuses on the area between Central Station, Weena and Pompenburg.

The Test Site shows 19 small-scale projects that have been realized over the past year. Everyone can now experience the (first part) of the Luchtsingel, the Dakakker (rooftop garden), De Dependance and other projects. More projects are currently in development and will be completed as the Biennale progresses. You can check the programme here.
