On Thursday 1 December Colin Stetson and the Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio, consisting of pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, saxophonist Evan Parker and drummer Paul Lovens, will perform at the mythical Bimhuis in Amsterdam. This programme is the next example of the bringing together of different generations of improvising musicians on stage at the Bimhuis. Previous ones consisted of Oren Ambarchi and Keith Rowe, and Icarus and Furt.
‘One of the great freejazz ensembles.’ The Guardian
Colin Stetson’s bass saxophone playing can conjure up the sound of a complete brass ensemble, percussion included. His hypnotic solo pieces showcase extraordinary saxophone techniques. Aside from his current band Bon Iver he has collaborated with Arcade Fire, Tom Waits and his master Anthony Braxton.
Stetson’s solo concert will be followed by a performance by one of his great examples, saxophone innovator Evan Parker, in the legendary trio line-up with pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach and drummer Paul Lovens. For almost 40 year now this group has been at the vanguard of European improvised jazz.
