A wonky birthday for Sonic Warfare
The Melkweg is celebrating the 2 year anniversary of its dubstep and experimental bass music night Sonic Warfare. The club night that started in 2006, the year dubstep enjoyed its international tipping point. In 2 years almost 50 different artists from around the world have taken the stage of the Melkweg, a publicly funded music venue in the center of Amsterdam. Amongst them, renowned pioneers of this latest branch of the hardcore continuum like Kode9, Mala and Rustie.
The programme of tonight consists of two artists that have shaped a new sound in 2008: wonky. According to blogger Martin Clark (also known as producer Blackdown) it is a theme (“not a genre”) in which the “mid-range is being hijacked by off-kilter, unstable synths.” The quality of the music is a complex coming together of degrooved rhythmstructures and gliding 8-bit melodies, creating an echo chamber of familiar (and sometimes nostalgic) electronic sounds with slowed down hyperrhythms. Utterly undanceable, yet pleasantly urgent. Played on a good system, you somehow move. Hudson Mohawke and Zomby are arguably two of its most influencial proponents. At the Melkweg they will be joined by two artists that could get more notice in 2009: Lukid and Gemmy.
Sonic Warfare is programmed by Juha for the Melkweg. If you would like to visit tonight just send a message.
