It’s not where you from, it’s where you at

Today we visited Trouw and de Verdieping to talk with the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam about a possible collaboration. We are pretty excited about the prospect of aggregating organisations to create new projects at de Verdieping.

One would be the role of architecture in hip hop aesthetics, an idea pondered by Michiel and subscribed to by Victor Ponten of Habbekrats. “It’s not where you from, it’s where you at” (sic). If anyone has some examples of this perceived relationship please let me know, we appreciate your candor.

And before I forget, here are some more pictures of Trouw 15 days before opening.

Interesting topic. I think hiphop music, and hiphop culture in a broader sense, is for a big part about certain codes and creating a culture for yourself – apart from where you from. For example, I still follow a hiphop music forum where all kinds of people meet; people who are in their ‘real life’ art critics, or plumbers, high school students, or fathers, graphic designers, or corporate businessmen, or unemployed, religious, non-religious. The only thing in common is their interest in the same music (that has his own kind of language, history etc.).

On the other hand – hiphop is very much about where you’re from. Since the music is originally from a very specific part of the us (the bronx, new york, afro american & latino communities) you can’t close you’re eyes for where it’s from, and where you’re from yourself.

That’s exactly why it’s an interesting topic, Radna ;) It’s something about the duality of man, to quote classic quote.

Thank you both for contributing, since I consider you both authorities on the subject in the Netherlands.
